I hear so many people say they are “bad at meditating” - as if there is this solitary way it should look or feel... but honestly - the more I do it and the more I learn about it, the more I realize there isn’t one approach or style to meditation and there is definitely NO should.
What if rather then judging ourselves as bad at it because we can’t find utter stillness of the mind - we just took it as a time to check in and notice ... notice where our mind goes - notice the thought patterns - notice how those thoughts effect the body - notice the sensations in the body... what if laying there and just being with ourself - allowing our body to experience stillness IS good enough?
There are literally hundreds of ways to approach meditation - it can be a chance to just spend some time with ourself checking in like described above. It can be focusing or listening to a certain topic. It can be noticing noises or our own breath.
It can be asking ourself or the universe a question and remaining curious to possibility, it can be channeling energy, healing.
And meditation doesn’t even have to be body stillness - it’s mindfulness - it’s being aware - being present - so maybe meditation for some of us is expressed through yoga, movement, walking, nature, running downhill... though I’m beginning to realize the value in all facets and the importance of exploring meditation on multi levels ... once upon a time I used to find mental stillness in active movement, and while this provided a load of value, I realized that I still needed more - I needed the space to still the body and check in with myself - I actually needed not just mental stillness - but mental mindfulness - I needed to allow myself to just notice what thoughts were coming up and what effect they played in my body.
Also, I find a ton of value in meditating or being with a certain topic or specific thought - like loving kindness .... some days I can lay down and completely drop in - feeling like I’m floating - experiencing utter stillness inside and out and that is beautiful - but other days - I find myself noticing a thought - and coming back to center literally every 15 seconds - this is also amazing - because I learn about myself through these days - and I know I’m flexing my mental muscles and practicing ... the point is that everyday is different and no days are bad or good - I’m beginning to just trust that each day however it shows up is just what my mind and body needs.
Meditation also doesn’t have to be long - although it can be- maybe it’s 3 minutes, or 5 minutes to begin... and then one day 30 minutes elapses and we don’t even realize it until it’s done.
Ultimately- just making a conscious effort to explore ALL the vast varieties of practicing mindfulness and finding what makes sense to, and works for each of us m, is what is most important ... honoring ourselves by carving out moments in our day to give ourself much needed space.
I really hope that everyone I love gives themselves the gift of stillness and mindfulness in whatever capacity makes sense for them- through exploring their options. MOST importantly my hope is for us to all stop judging ourselves, and rather celebrate the wins. Approach mindfulness free of labels and judgement and just see what happens... Let’s just be curious together 🙏🏼❤️🙏🏼
